Go on Yahoo Chat, then to "Family and Home" then to the Genealogy room.. Lot's of good folks there that do Genealogy and if you are polite they will direct you to good sites and help as well.

There are some free versions of subscription sites that still have some decent public record resources such as birth records, marital records, and the Social Security Death Index. One really decent one is:
