I live in New Hampshire, but I don't know of any hotels or inns, or anything worth mentioning. However, someone mentioned an inn in North Conway, so that may be nice. The northern part of New Hampshire is the nicest. The mountains and the notches (Pinkham, etc.) are gorgeous, especially during this time of year and when there's snow. I love it up there, my family's from Berlin, NH. I live in the Lakes Region, which may be the most popular tourist destination in the state. It's pretty nice, but it's better in the summer when you can actually enjoy the lakes. Unless there's snow and you're into snowmobiling, like many of us here from New Hampshire are.
Now, you said you were vacationing in New England. Are you going to Maine? Maybe you should try that if you weren't planning on it. There's a lot of great inns and bed and breakfasts I could recommend. My grandmother has been inn keeper at many inns along the coast of Maine in the past. Currently, she's the inn keeper at the Inns at Blackberry Common in Camden, Maine. Our family gets to go there for free during the holidays. We're going during Thankgiving, I can't wait! It's so beautiful there, and there's a lot of other nice places, too, right by the ocean. Definitely try Maine. If not this time, some other time.
Have a great vacation with your husband!
Hope you can find a nice, romantic place to stay.

My husband and I have been to the Darby Field Inn a few times and we love it!
It's technically in Albany, NH, but it's just a few miles South of Conway, NH (where there's TONS of shops and great activities).
It's not super expensive, but it's certainly not cheap.... and most of the rooms have a tub made for two ;)

Oh, try to stay at some of the ski resorts of the White Mountains/Mount Washington area. Even if you aren't going to ski, they are still the best places to stay with the nicest people and the best food. So cozy! My husband and I always stay around Attitash Peak every year, and have a GREAT time.

Definitely try Easter Slope Inn. Its right in downtown north Conway, so you can walk to all the shops and restaurants. They also have a playhouse right nextdoor that is always showing plays.
