Think about this... if you happened to get pine gum on you, and then fell on some bird feathers, it would be a great mess to get off, would it not? Well these poor souls had that happen to their entire bodies.

It was in their hair, even in their eyes.. up in their buttocks,, everywhere.. what happened was that they picked at it, pulling off skin.... they had no chemicals to remove it, no acetone, or gasoline...

Some probably committed suicide, others, if they were lucky , had friends to help pick these hardened feathers out.. it might have taken months..

It was a horrible torture.. Something perhaps that our current vice president would admire.. and then, he'd stroll off to church and proclaim his following of Jesus...

They did not die, that was the point, to LIVE with humiliation. The victims would walk around for days with the feathers stuck to their body. Everywhere they went they would feel embarrassed, they was no good way to remove the tar. The also developed infected sores all over their body. The tar would burn their skin and the bacteria on the feather would vector bacteria for an infection.

They died from being dipped in hot tar and the feathers were just to add humiliation to the method of death and so that those disposing of the body afterward wouldn't get their hands too sticky. Sad and gross, huh?

They died. The human body cannot endure temptures over 112 degrees and the tar was very hot. Temperture over 112 degrees result in brain damage and the body can not function without it

they died from asphyxiation - the skin is required to breathe, when it is covered with tar - it can't, and the individual dies a slow, painful death - and thus the whole idea behind tar and feathering.

It was a death sentence. If they did not die of the burs immediately, the tar sealed their skins pores and they died more slowly.

Lynching was kinder. We have plenty of people who would like to revive both.
