Just the cost of power.
If you use ur PC more than 4-5 times per day, you are better off leaving it powered on with the monitor off and the Hard disks on sleep after 20 minutes. I am a Computer Engineer (yes, with a degree in Engineering, and not from Devry). We leave our servers on 24-hours a day.
You have more wear and tear by restarting computers than leaving it in hibernate mode. Bthe time your computer starts to wear out it will be obsolete anyway.
I know so.. I sell hundred of PCs. and have many dozens of business clients who leave the PC on all the time. In 3 years (the normal warranty I provide) I have only 2-3% issues, and that is mainly from dust and smokers!

As you can tell from the varied answers there are a few things to consider.
1. monetary costs.
As stated in a few places it depends on power consumption of your computer. As a fellow engineer myself, often we try to simplify equations and in the case of power consumption it's primarily the power used by your monitor. You can check the specs of your monitor power consumption=P. Then P x t x cost. where t= time and cost= cost by your electric company. However you will likely burn up more in lights, tv, microwave, and other appliances, and only see a fraction associated to your comp.
2. There is the cost of wear and tear to the computer, but as technology has advanced, the hardware requires less cooling (than say a vacuum tube) and the fans that supply cooling are far more dependable. The computer will be fine for a long time without being shutdown.

You need to figure how many watts it uses first. Is the monitor on as well ? It's a waste of power...and does'nt really help your computer either. People I know turn everything off when it's not in use.

I've heard and been told by guys who supposedly know that the cost of rebooting wipes out the savings from turning the computers off. But I turn mine off, because mine has a fan that runs all the time...and that sucker has to be getting worn out running constantly.......lol........
