I saw the other posting where they suggest a high concentration of bleach. I can't do that since I have a septic system. I've tried vinegar, normal amounts of biodegradable bleach, leaving the lid open in between washings... help! it always smells like sweaty gym socks.

Use liquid softener, Softlan, gives a good result
You're using the top loading type
So add some after the wash cycle but just before the rinse
If for front loading models
You can pour it at the same time with detergents
But, in the right end side of the compartments
There is a box like contraption with a pin like plunger
It floats when it reach that cycle where water is diverted in
Happy flagrant washing
