He was murdered on December 8th, 1980 outside of the entrance of the Dakota building, where he resided with his wife Yoko Ono and his then 5-year old son, Sean. Yoko was present at her husband's death, which occurred when Chapman, who had been noticed by Lennon earlier that day (Lennon even signed his copy of Double Fantasy), called out to Lennon. Lennon was then shot five times in the back and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:07PM.

I remember it very well; it happened late on a Monday. I was watching "The Tonight Show with Johhny Carson" and they interrupted it for a Special Report.

On December 8, 1980, he was murdered in New York city by Mark Chapman. Chapman pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life. Parole has been denied to him several times and he reamains confined at Attica State Prison in Attica, NY.
