Is this how ignorant our youth has become?

I've been wondering the same thing. I always make sure that the things I type are not only correct spelling-wise, but easy to understand as well. I wish others would do the same.

I know most people use chat-speak because it's quicker, but honestly - if you're one of the lucky ones in this world that is educated and fortunate enough to even be on a computer, why dumb yourself down by typing like an imbecile?

Here, people-- kids as well as a number of adults-- rush to answer questions, so in that respect, making mistakes is inevitable. But as for the younger kids using slang and purposely misspelling words, I don't think it's because they're necessarily "ignorant." I'm obviously not their teacher (or I'd be a lot more mortified by some of what I see), but I'm almost certain they don't all hand their homework in like that.

Online, few young people care about using correct grammar, and using spell check because the only thing they get is nagged at. They're not getting graded, and they still achieve points regardless of their poor use of the English language, so they don't care. Should they? I can't judge that honestly. I am still on the fence. But the one thing that really bugs me is when I see people who are apparently in their 20s and above who can't put together a proper sentence to save their lives! That right there is pure ignorance! Kids just need more time..... Adults need a reality check.

Well, I'm an English major and, I have to say that is does make me upset when people in here don't spell correctly but, the other thing is, people are in such a hurry to get answers to their questions that they don't care how they spell. Lol I don't know what this generation has come to. I'm 18 and I have the wisdom of a 45 year old so, I really don't mind adapting to people who can't spell or are just simply in a hurry!

I'm an educated man, but because I don't generally proofread my postings, I occasionally make mistakes. I know the difference between there and they're, but I've sometimes typed incorrectly. And my spelling is fairly marginal, but I don't think it usually detracts from the point I'm trying to make. What really frustrates me, is when people who disagree with me point out spelling mistakes in an attempt to discredit or otherwise embarrass me. It's silly.

Having said that, I agree that there seems to be somewhat of a decline in the grammar and spelling skills of our youth these days. This is an observation, not a reference to a scientific study.

I hate to say this, but YES this is how ignorant our youth has become! I teach high school and am faced with this every day. I cannot understand how these children think they are ready for the work world if they cannot communicate with others in a proper way.

You are absolutely right!!!!!! I just ignore the questions that are not complete and misspelled. They don't even bother to us the "Check Spelling". I am happy to see that there is someone that thinks the same as me!!!
Have a wonderful Sunday!!!

Maybe it is because they haven't completed 3rd grade. It bothers me a lot too, even if they can type in complete sentences their spelling is off! HELLO, there is a spell check button!

Lazy is more like it, but its really annoying. I don't even bother answering those questions. Unfortuanately some of these people will problably carry this over into adulthood.
