In my experience, there are only two areas that causes this type of problem if the BIOS HAS detected the HDD.

The jumper isn't set for Slave but for Master or for Cable Select (not usuable for Windows XP, 98 or other newer Windows).

The IDE cable is not seated firmly in place or the power connector is not seated firmly in place. Sometimes the IDE cable or power wires may be damage internally and getting intermediate electrical signals.

It is rare for Windows NOT to see a HDD. Otherwise, try the solutions the others have mentioned, or go to the website for WD (listed below).

First go into your BIOS and have it auto detect it. Make sure the BIOS is seeing it. Then log back onto Windows. If it is not listed under my computer then go to CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, HARDWARE TAB, DEVICE MANAGER,DISK DRIVES and see if it is listed there. It is possible that windows does not show it because Windows has not formatted it. I had this problem once and I found it and had to format it using NTFS. Then it showed under MY COMPUTER. Hope this helps..
