Why would you want to avoid purchasing a CD case? They care about 20 cents each. The best idea is to burn two or more copies, then you have a backup in case one scratches. Then, purchase an appropriate storage case for them and keep it out of heat and away from light.

No one knows how long cd's keep, so you could copy it again every few years to be sure.

best way is to buy a jewel case for each CD and store them sideways not one on top of the other in a cool, temperature controlled area away from the sunlight, maybe in a light proof box. make 2 CDs for each photo set, and keep them in separate places, maybe one at home and one at work. also put them on a photo sharing website or on a server for an additional backup. or a portable external hard drive. finally get the best of them printed out. they are your memories and well worth the trouble, you don't want to lose them! btw, you should keep the format of your pics updated once every 5-10 years to keep up to date with any changes.

If you're worried about having your Cd's scratched.
You're worried you won't have enough hard disk space to save all you pictures on your hard drive, perhaps you should look into an external hard drive. They use a USB connection (mostly, but whatever connection you have, they can be adapted). Even if your computer crashes, or get a virus, your photos will be safe.
