Under the U.K Data Protection Act it's illegal. However our wonderful government seems to pick and choose how this act works! Ordinary people have no access to information, for instance I had flowers sent to me, the company forgot to include the card saying who sent them, they couldn't tell me who did because that information was covered by the act! On the other hand the the drivers licensing authority was selling people's addresses etc, quite illegally, to debt collectors and marketing companies - this is a government agency. Their excuse was that these companies had a prima face right to know, this was proved to be rubbish. Thank God we STILL have a free press, despite Blair and his cronies best efforts, or we would never have known. As for Yahoo actions, I think it is despicable. China is a repressive regime and these people are in real danger, to betray them so cynically is appalling. It shows what happens when one company becomes too powerful, they believe that rules and common humanity do not apply to them.

I think it's awful, that in the pursuit of money, companies like Yahoo are agreeing with Chinese censorship laws. Google was dallying with the idea of it too, but at least they seem to be wavering towards saying no.

It is their right if it is information that you provided willingly, and is consistent with their published usage policies.
It is the price you pay for using their service. If you don't want the info passed on, don't log in.
