4 low is when you are trying to get out of mud/snow or travelling less than 10mph. 4 high is for all other situations you would need 4x4 for.

My Dad has a 4x4 Dakota and was told by the dealer that 4 lo is for when u need more low end torque mainly if you are towing something and 4 hi is when you just want to go offroad or need to get out of rough road conditions. Hope this helps. P.S. My Dad has never put his in 4 lo yet cause he doesn't tow anything he puts it in 4 hi for bad weather.

I will make it simple for you. Only use 4 Lo when 4 Hi doesn't work.
4 Lo uses different gearing to make more torque at lower speeds.

4 hi is a lager ratio in the drive which means its used for min to med off-road. 4 low has a smaller ratio between gears and is meant for rougher, or harder terrains.

Four hi is for when you are on the highway IE ; high speeds and Four lo is for lower speeds, slippery conditions, better traction control.
