USA support tyranical regimes to safeguard the oil in the middle east and will go to war to protect it. China invest in africa selling military arms to african states including warlords to secure the rights to drill for oil in their lands. USA talks a good game about doing what is right, but when the threat to its oil needs, USA will forego what is moral or right, forego methods that are unpleasant like supporting genocide in sudan, and tyranical governments, for its own security including security to have free flowing oil markets. Another thing is I often here american journalist call the chinese government operate under bribes. Well, hello!!! The US congress and executive branch also operate under legal extortion and bribes called lobbyist paid vacations and golf trips. White people are no better in recieving perks legal or not, it is the same as bribery. Calling it a different name does not make it better.

The Middle East has been a rough place full of tyrants for a long time. The only difference is that now they have a lot of money due to oil revenues. One guy I know said that we made a big mistake by paying them for their oil, we should have just given them glass beads and colorful ribbons.

You make some very valid points.

However, like it or not, this country is oil dependent - and that's an understatement. This was never truer than in the mid seventies when the Arabs placed an embargo on exports - the United States industrial machines (that's yours and my jobs and our family's welfare) nearly ground to a halt. There were wage and price freeze mandates, long and ugly lines at the gas pumps and a huge loss in production hours for many American workers.

Until we find alternate energy sources, you had better believe we'll keep the spigots open.

Are some of our "methods" questionable, at best? Of course they are.
Any industrial country on this planet is, in effect, a hostage to the oil producers.

I'm guilty - you're guilty - we're all guilty. We don't conserve, we don't drive the most economical vehicles, we don't give an honest effort to drive only when it is absolutely necessary, we don't turn our thermostats down in the winter or up in the summer - in short, we don't give a damn - at least until the well starts to run dry.

We are addicted to convenience - not sacrifice.

A lot of this goes back to the cold war. We suported anyone who screamed "I HATE COMMIES!" loudle enough. We are still paying for that. This policy was party independent.
