That's life's greatest mystery. I kind of would like to think that he's the father of her child, it would just be kind of an interesting irony for the Baudelaires to raise his daughter. I have to admit, I love Count Olaf, he makes me laugh in every book, and he felt pressured into evil and greed, while Kit was on the other side of the schism. They probably seperated over the schism, with Kit having faith in the good in humanity and Count Olaf having no faith in humanity. Count Olaf does have a little, tiny, ounce of good in him, I have to admit that book made me cry. But I kind of think Lemony (Daniel Handler, I've started reading his non children's books) wanted to shock us. What confuses me is when he says he has nothing left to live for since he's lost his boat, fortune, henchmen and true love. Was he referring to Esme or Kit? Kit didn't die yet at this point...
