Saving Private Ryan was the best! But it was not a true story. The Longest Day was also great. So realistic and very true. The Bridge was a great small film. Very realistic. Das Boot was depressing but so is real war. Wind Talkers was another real gutsy film. I have not seen Flags of Our Fathers, but it has caused a real buzz here, and I am destined to see it soon. I do know there was a short story of a High School Tour of Washington who met the son of one of the survivors when they went to the memorial. In the story he expressed to these kids what the core of the movie was about, that none of these guys ever thought of himself as a hero. That none of the guys on Iwo Jima really fought for his country, that they really fought for each other, and that the buddies they lost out there were the reasons that many of them suffered so much when they survived and the other guys didn't. (core of the post traumatic stress syndrome) That when you call everyone a hero, then none of them are heros. It is like the editorial cartoons of the cold war era when every Russian had a hero button on his lapel.

Gosh I realized I left out Platoon, and Full metal Jacket, Even Born on the 4th of July showed the end result of war in one guy's personal conflict

The best war movies are carefully crafted...Private Ryan is one, Enemy Below and "Das Boot" are a couple of the best.

Pearl Harbour was not realistic. The mistakes were awful and that film should not be shown again. Same for U571 - the story was not even remotely correct.

Schindler's List is another excellent war film.
