I have never had a hermit crab but my best friend has one...personally I like fish. The hermit crab you can actully take out of the cage and hold but it doesn't do much. Fish are active at all times of the day and seem to be more entertaining. I also thought the hermit crab smelled bad. If you are interested, platys alot of times reproduce very quickly which can be fun but at the same time can get annoying. With either pet your going to have to clean the tank once a week. Hope that helps. As for more information on careing for the pet try this site for car on hermit crabs:

I personal like hermies. I started with (2) 2 1/2 years ago and now have 44. I love them. They are easy to take care of. Check out the yahoo group below for question on hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs are nocternal and make a surprising amount of noise all night long.
Fish tanks are better. That way, even when the Platys die, you can get (or breed) more of them.
Consider carnivorous plants. That's what I'm doing with mine. Do lots of research first though, it's more complicated that I originally thought.

I have friends that have the hermit crabs and they really like them. They grow and you have to buy larger shells for them. They seem pretty cute to me. But to be sure go to the pet stores and take a look, talk to the people that work there and get lots of information from them and then make your decision.

I like hermit crabs. They are not to hard to take care of, and the can live for a while. I used to let mine craw around on my books while I done my home work. Now, if you would like a mammal, you can put hamsters, and degus in glass tanks as long as they have things to run on and such.

hermit crabs are VERY low maintance i have 3. and mine don't smell? but any way i put 1/2 the tank in sand and 1/2 in rocks with a heating mat thing stuck to the side you spray them down a few times a day and i just feed mine once a week and check their water daily they do need a vitamin supplement reptical it goes in their water. they can be fun but boring too i like a more interactive pet like my ferrets. but my son gets a kick out of them.
