He is by far my favorite.......but to answer your question lets look at it from a financial perspective. After all the WWE is in it for the money.
I would have to say that in the last decade, the Deadman has been one of, if not the best sellers of merchandise the WWE has ever seen. Think about it, whether he was a "face" or a "heel", we buy his shirts, we get the costumes for our kids at Halloween, we cheer (hence butts in the seats). I have been to many, MANY live events and even at those times when the Taker is not wrestling there are still shirts, signs, and folks dressed up like him in the crowd. He doesn't even have to be IN wrestling at the time. He has taken a break a few times and even then it's all still in the crowds. The fans love him. AND with a gimmick like the "Deadman", he can be brought back from any situation even "death" its self. Awesome marketing angle, one of the best ever.
Now as far as his wrestling, he is one of the top tier wrestlers and has been for ever. Before he took on the personna of Taker, he was Mean Mark, teamed up with another tall man Dangerous Dan Spivey, they dominated a tag-team division that had no other players anywhere near their size. His mat prowess is complimented by his awesome striking ability. Considered by many to be the best striker ever to wrestle, it seems that he would have no trouble applying that particular set of skills in real life situations when needed. Making him in my opinion one of an elite class of Sports Entertainers that I believe can "back up" who they portray in the ring. Taker, Kurt Angle, Foley (based on his pain threshold), these are a few of those men.
So, in conclusion anyone would be hard pressed to not say Taker is one of the best if not the best wrestler ever.
