The best CPU available that money can buy is the Core 2 Duo Processor by INTEL. It is the fastest CPU with dual core processing.
The actual model you should get if you have the budget is the Intel core 2 EX6800.
But i would recommend you getting the EX6400 Core 2 Duo which is reasonable price at USD200.
See http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

The property of a good m.board normally is a type 975X Motherboards.
See http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/10/11/four_975x_motherboards_for_core_2_duo/

I would recommend getting Asus P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard. Any motherboard from Asus is a worth buy.
See http://www.merchanthound.com/items/22098611
The motherboard price is reasonable at 215USD

I hope that helps.

You ask more than you think.

First, what you may consider a good or best computer may be different than I would think, or others would consider to be a good computer.

Same with components. But, some components are easier than others.

IMHO, AMD CPU's are better than Pentium CPU's, especially for gaming.

You will get many different answers for M.Boards. I like the MSI (very compatible for AMD chips) mainly because of the features that allow you to know updates for your Motherboard BIOS and other components.

As for pricing, you will have to shop around. Some places will have them for less than places I know. Use the Internet for price comparisons. cnet.com and other websites will help you with finding sites that have price comparisons.

Make sure you do your own research. Don't rely on someone elses work. They may have gotten what they consider the best for themselves, but it may not be what you are looking for. And, that you will not know until the PC is sitting on your desk and not performing as you thought it would.

If you don't know what the best CPU is, then you probably aren't that much of an extreme computer user. Not to mention that the extreme best is usually not worth the price. For around $900 you can get a dual core system, with 1GB of ram and enough hard drive space to last you. Go to a few places that sell computers and shop around. Very few people need the absolute top of the line, and the performance over middle line isn't usually worth the price unless for the most extreme gamers.

I think these days, the best CPU around is the Intel Core Duo series. You should also invest in a high-end graphics card now with at least 256MB DDR2 RAM to be able to support Windows Vista with full Aero support when it comes out. In addition to that, 2GB of RAM is par for the course now, but the more, the better.

A DVD writer drive, memory card reader and possibly a FireWire capability is also essential.

You should go to the website of Dell, hp or Gateway and select a base system within your price range and then customize it to include the parts you need/can afford.

Aim to keep the machine for at least 3 years.

Most people simply don't need an extremely powerful or expensive machine. These guys who list all this powerful stuff just want to see you waste your money.

The one who said if you don't know what you want means you don't need much is absolutely correct. Most computer usage of most home users can be done on a $500 emachines machine. Browse the web; edit a few pictures; write a letter. Check your e-mail.

In fact, most of it can be done on an old Windows 98 machine.

Only high speed graphics shops or heavy duty gamers need all that expensive stuff.
