Perhaps not the world, but I would like to believe that I make a difference in people's lives, one person at a time.

I think it depends on what you believe.
I believe that every decision that you make affects your life and those around you, plus it changes things for others that you don't know. So say the situation of you up for a job comes up, but there is another person up for that same job. You are offered the job and you take it. The person who didn't get the job will have to continue looking for a job, taking one somewhere else possibly from someone else looking for a job. There will be someone hired to replace you in your old job, and someone to replace them. If you must relocate to a new city for the job, you will leave an open apartment or house where someone else will move in and begin a new chapter in their life, you will move into a new home - buying a home and making it possible for the seller to get on with their new plans, you will be making new friends in your neighbors and co-workers. Your children/spouse will also do the same. So just in the situation that I described, there were up to 7+ people who's lives would be different because of a decision that you made about your life.

"My" existence may not change the world but it can change many people's lives.
Many other people have changed the world though. I guess it's according to what you want to do with your life.
