Basically people always want to hear all the good things even it is a lie. But sometimes truth is not what people like to hear and they just got mad and feel that you are critizing them.
Most of us cannot accept the fact that we need others to point out our shortcomings and when others start to point out our shortcomings, we get offended and become angry with our friends.

I would begin by asking myself -- What am I doing or why do I find myself around so many people who stink? Are they related? Are they standing around in a fish market?
I gather from your question that you have some authority to tell people they are standing around to much. In which case you should be some kind of supervisor. If the people you supervise stink; you need to look at working conditions, hiring practice and morale and incentives.
If you are not a supervisor you need to put on some heavy perfume and look for another job.

The truth hurts. I think truth and sincerity if done out of love for the person is beneficial, but the person may initially feel stung. Sometimes if someone tells me something I need to hear it may sting at first, but then I think about it and am eventually truly grateful that the person cared enough to tell me the truth. Just be sure that you do it because you want to help and not because you are trying to hurt.

I think that would depend on your relationship with them. If they are a close friend or family member I would say it's ok to be that Honest. If it is someone you are not familiar with then that's just rude and humiliating.
Being honest is good but you have to be also careful with people so as not to offend them.
Are you telling people the truth to HELP them or to be mean and come off as superior to them? I would assume you do it to be helpful. People won't take your help kindly if you are brutal with them.

perhaps it isn't the truth that hurts but how one tells it. telling the truth does not give one the right to be rude or unkind. think how you really would want someone to inform you, kindly respecting your dignity. or dumping it all on you like you don't mean squat. would you want them to blurt it out in front of others so embarrassing you or to tell you alone. would you prefer them to make you the object of a joke about it or to really care about you , your feelings and how you are? guess ask oneself why am i telling this and is it necessary.

I would definitely want to know. Most people are just afraid of the truth or in major denial.
