it depends on what all needs to be done to your engine such as machine work, if you take your engine out and take it to your local favorite machine shop they can tell you on average how much your particular engine will cost to get rebuilt, now if you need to have your crank reground have the cylinders bored out and oversized all this will run you more have the heads checked and the block and heads magnafluxed the average i have paid for an engine to be revuilt at a machine shop is around 1100 bucks but if you take it to a shop and have them remove and install the engine you will be looking at more as high as three grand for them to pull your engine and rebuild it and put it back in you can also go the route of buyuing a rebuilt engine through a reputable compant they usaully run around 1500 bucks depending on application and you will have to pay a core charge up front until you return a rebuildable engine to them so your upfront cost can be as high as 2500 or so but you get your core charge i have seen as high as 1000 dollars back when you return the old bad engine you have several options depending on what you want to do i would spend the money at the machine shop

Depends on the engine, depends if it needs to be pulled and replaced, and depends if you're looking for modifications and increased power.

A bone-stock Chevy 350 rebuild is very cheap and is best to get one already done from a shop - $400 or so.

A BMW V-12 could be $20K.

Building a Honda motor for 350HP is expensive, but very possible.

So, you need to be much more specific and be very clear with your intentions and goals for the completed job.
