read the owners manual as there are several versions of navigation units dating back to the mid 90's, so it is hard to give specifics w/o the year/model.

Very complicated to be explained here. Better get back to the user manual or go visit a BMW agent so they can demonstrate it live.
Too much electronics and complications in recent BMWs, too bad. I really miss the 2002 !!

it is just as easy (or hard) as with any other nav. system. Select ´navigation´ on the idrive or select the navigation system on the entertainment (radio /CD) section of the console.

Select county, street and off you go!

You need to be more specific on the type of nav. system, for me to be able to give you more detail. I am aware that BMW has several systems and variations in use at this time.
