We are using pig or cow intestines as a halloween prop, I know it sounds weird, but we just thought it would make the effect look realistic. So we are trying to use intestines from animals and are unsure what we can do to keep it looking realistic but at the same time avoid that horrible smell. We don't want all the trick-or-treaters throwing up! Do you all think bleach will work or boiling them, or is there a better way?

Since everyone is asking, we are just going to buy these intestines from a grocery store or a meat market...ok, here's the idea for our Halloween Haunted house: My fiance made a rack and his brother is going to be Leatherface and is going to pretend to saw my fiance in half. A fake version of his lower body is going to fall onto the floor and the intestines are just supposed to make it look like he actually is being cut in half. This isn't some kiddy halloween thing, this family really goes all out for halloween.

I doubt it, the reason flatulence itself smells is due to by-products given off by bacteria in our guts in exchange for them digesting certain foods for us (symbiotic relationship & a type of fermentation). The only real way a vegetarian would smell better in terms of their s*it, is if the quantity of by-product was less. Think about it? is a drop of vinegar less smelly than a cup? if so why........there isn't as much vinegar quantity, its not that the inherent drop of vinegar actually doesn't give off as much odor. To give TMI back, my s*it at times still can smell bad. In fact it takes longer to digest vegetables & there wider yield of nutrients would lead one to hypothesise, a larger potential for other ''disastrous'' smells (+ the old stories of beans producing gases etc). More than likely we're adapted to perceive the odor of faeces as bad because its toxic for our systems to ingest so to stop this it doesn't smell nice for consumption or taste, the same way a dog finds raw meat delicious but vegetables not, or a fly finds s*it a tasty meal. I'd be suprised if that wasn't a strong factor. So really i don't see why a vegetarians faeces would smell any better or worse than a meat eaters. Also as somebody pointed out cow-s*it doesn't smell nice at all yet all it is is grass.

Before they used plastic trips for sausages they used animal intestines (as a matter of fact they still use them for homemade stuff).
You have to wash them carefully but throughrouly, scrub them with sodium bicarbonate, then boil them and let them dry. If you want to stuff them they must be wet for when they completely dry they are like paper and can tear.
The sodium bicarbonate helps to cut the stench out.
Happy Halloween.

Keep them refrigerated until the last moment then lay them on a bed of ice for display. Cover the ice with something decorative.
