Ok ! I need help with the following using the multiplication principle and the addition principle for the following equation. I keep on getting 125/12 for the answer but at the back of the book it says 35/12. Heres the problem. Please let me know what you got !!

4/3 - 1/5t = 3/4

I still dont know why it becomes a subtraction instead of an addition if the problem is a subtraction to begin with. Dont you do the opposite step at the end ??

4/3 - t/5 = 3/4

Common denominator is 60. Multiply by that:

80 - 12t =45
80 - 45 = 12t = 35
t = 35/12

Ok, first you're going to have to be really careful about what you're asking. 1/5t and (1/5)t are 2 different terms. If you solve for the former, you get 12/35. If you solve for the latter, you get 35/12.

Please, you're not the only one making these errors. It's really really difficult for someone to help if we can't understand the question. Don't say feet when you mean inches, don't assume we can tell the difference between a subscript and a superscript in a string of digits, and don't assume we know if a value is part of the numerator or denominator.

Always, always, always use parentheses.

So, after a bit of trial and error, what you are really asking to solve is:

(4/3) - (1/5)t = 3/4.

First, isolate the t variable by subtracting (3/4) from both sides and adding (1/5)t to both sides:

(4/3) - (1/5)t - (3/4) + (1/5)t = (3/4 ) - (3/4) + (1/5)t

on the left side, (1/5)t cancel out.
on the right side, (3/4) cancel out, leaving:

(4/3) - (3/4) = (1/5)t

The LCD for 3 and 4 is 12, so multiply 4/3 by 4/4 and 3/4 by 3/3.
(4/3)*(4/4) - (3/4)*(3/3) = (1/5)t
(4*4)/(3*4) - (3*3)/(4*3) = (1/5)t
(16/12) - (9/12) = (1/5/)t
(16 - 9)/12 = (1/5)t
7/12 = (1/5)t

muliply both sides by 5

(7/12)*5 = 5*(1/5)*t
(7*5)/12 = (5/5)t
35/12 = t

First, put the 4/3 on the right hand side
-1/5t = 3/4 - 4/3 = -7/12
now multiply by -5 to eliminate the -1/5
t = 35/12

OR

First, multiply each term by 4 to get rid of the denominator in 3/4
16/3 - 4/5t = 3
Now multiply each term by 3
16 - 12/5t = 9
Now multiply by 5
80 - 12t = 45
-12t = 45 - 80 = -35
t = 35/12

4/3-1/5t=3/4 => -1/5t=3/4-4/3=-7/12 => 1/5t=7/12 =>35t=12(by cross mustiplication) Therefore,t= 12/35.But I think the problem is 4/3-(1/5)Xt=3/4 Then the answer will be t=35/12It has to be solved in the following way:_ 4/3-t/5=3/4 => -t/5=3/4-4/3 =.- t/5=-7/12 =>.t/5=7/12 => 12t=35 Therefore,t=35/12 ans.

-1/5t = 3/4 - 4/3

-1/5t = 3(3) / 4(3) - 4(4) / 3(4) = 9/12 - 16/12 = -7/12

t = (-7/12) x 5 / -1 = 35 /12

Hope it helps
