It COMPLETELY DEPENDS on the game. If it's like Maplestory, it's all about how much time you spend on it. If it's a fighting game, then it has a little more to do with strategy and correct timing and stuff. If it's an FPS, it's partially about how much you practise and strategize; mainly skill.
Your best bet is to search online or ask a friend who's good, for tips.

Spend Countless hours glued to the tv playing the game and only get up to eat and use the bathroom.

Only way to get good at any game is to play it. Learn what the controls do, well enough that you don't have to think about them.
