We just moved and there is something dead and decomposing somewhere. We can't find it after a 2 day search. How long does it take to completely decompose and quit smelling so bad?

depends on what it is and the conditions it is rotting in and how big it is

It's probably a dead mouse or rat in the wall! If you live in a hot climate it shouldn't take too long, unless it is a dog or cat under the house, then it would take longer, and if you live where the winters are cold, what ever it is will freeze then thaw in the spring and finish decomposing which means the smell will be there until the thing is completely gone. get several cans of Lysol and complain to your land lord!

I would search your new home top to bottom very carefully. It could be a larger animal than you think, possibly even a cat. The sooner you find the source the sooner it can be removed and disinfected around the whole area. Until then you can just keep air fresheners in each room and hope that it will dry up before it decays further. If it dries up you won't smell it. I found this at my grandmother's house with mice.

Elephants take about five years. Rats take about 2 weeks.

Oh my, that's too bad....it's going to take a while for that odor to naturally dissipate. I'd keep looking for the foul origin and do something about it.
