There are several reference to Sodom & sodomy in th Bible.
The word sodomy does refer back to the city of Sodom and the fact that men were having s*x with each over.
God destroyed Sodom because there were not 10 righteous men in the city when God sent his angels to the city.
God saved Lot, his wife, and two daughters. Lot's wife looked back at the Sodom and was turned into a pillar of salt.
It is covered in Gensis 18 - 19

The people of Sodom and Gomorrahcommitted sodomy.
According to Wikipedia:
"Sodomy is a term of biblical origin used to characterize certain sexual acts that were attributed to citizens of ancient Sodom. The term is most commonly used to describe the specific act of anal sex between two males, or between a male and a female. The term "sodomy" also may include non-coital sexual acts ranging from oral sex to paraphilia. It is sometimes used to describe human-animal sexual intercourse (a.k.a. bestiality, zoophilia), and in the German language, this is the primary use of the term. Sodomy laws forbidding certain types of sex acts have been instituted in many cultures."
The "towns" of Sodom and Gomorrah were actually pleasure camps run to service various large-scale construction sites in the Holy Land. In these “towns” all sort of pleasures were available; name any form of sex with man, woman, child or beast and you could find it there. Opium products and alcohol products like wine were also hugely popular. The citizens of these towns were only happy to provide anything that the workers wanted with no respect for morals of manners.
It is theorized that the last location of the “towns” were inside some Syrian caves. These “towns” were actually camps that moved with the construction crews. Something similar appeared around the gold miner camps in Alaska and the American Southwest, and following the Intercontinental Railroad. These camps were made up of people providing services to the miners during their off time. Pawnshops, cleaners, and bars were common as were houses of prostitution and opium drug dens. They must have been like Sodom and Gomorrah. These camps were often considered a “necessary evil” and were permited for a while. But, when the local folk of real towns and cites started to frequent the worst establshisment the citizens usually demanded that something should be done. The most common answer was for the police to run them off and force them to set up in some other region away from the people they protected. Because of this and because the work sites often moved these pleasure camps were portable like a circus is.
That's why God destroyed them. The only good person in the two towns was Lot. God warned him to leave early and to not look back at the destruction. His wife did and for her crime she was turned into a pillar of salt, proving that the "Lord our God is a vengeful one"

The connection may come from the story of Lot recieving a visit from the two angels. Some men of the city came to his door and wanted to have sex with who they thought were two men.
Sodomy is the homosexual act, Sodom is the city in which it happend

Sodom was named because it is a place of corruption. The word sodomy means any deviation in sex.
It is named that because both are corruptions of what they were meant to be.
