i think every doctor is different. If they are trying to figure out how far along you are they might do one right away ot if there is a problem they will also give an ultrasound. BUt the key time is around the 20th week when they check all the organs and stuff, this is the main ultrasound. For me this is the only ultrasound i have had and i wont get another unless a problem is suspected.

Every embryo is the same size until they are 9 weeks of gestational age. So sometime after that is ideal, because that way, the sonographer can tell how your baby is developing. I got my first ultrasound at 12 weeks. You'll be able to see your baby's heart chambers, kidneys, and brain, as well as his or her little head! Somewhere between 16 and 20 weeks, (although I had to wait till 22 weeks because my baby was stubborn and wouldn't uncross her legs!) you can usually find out the gender of your baby. Good luck!

generally the 1st required ultrasound is at 12weeks...they measure all organs and check for down syndrome......if there are suspected complications ultrasounds are done earlier....and some gynos actually have a machine in their office and may opt to use it as early as 6 weeks......however too many ultrasounds are not recommended...throughout your pregnancy you only need to have 12 and 20 week scans........
