The same as you open an Internet website. Type the address of the site in the address bar of your browser and press [Enter]. If you're trying to access an intranet site from somewhere outside of your work (such as your office intranet from home), you'll likely require a connection to your office network first. Usually that's done through VPN. Once you've established a VPN connection, you should be able to access intranet sites from home just as if you're at the office (be sure to adjust proxy settings if you're office uses a proxy server).

Hagbard73 answered most of your question, but the one thing you won't do is you will NOT put http://mycompanywebintranet.com

Instead you might put someting like

http://mycompanyintranet

or whatever internal DNS name they have given it.
