I honestly do not know if this would work on a mechanical basis, but if you reversed the polarity of the wiring on a motor other than a starter, it should rotate in the reverse direction. If the generator starter mount is grounded, you would have to figure out how to insulate the starter from the mount and run battery cables to the starter motor.

When I say I don't know if it would work on a mechanical basis, I mean that although reversing the wires should make the starter turn the opposite direction, it might also destroy the starter in the process.

Would it be possible to somehow mount the starter on the opposite side, turning in in the opposite direction?

You cannot use a starter from a car, there is no way to reverse the rotation.

you can either get the right one or have the one on it rebuilt. check your local yellow pages for a starter rebuilder. if they know what they are doing they can get you the correct starter or the right parts to reverse rotation depending on the starter

the polarity can be reversed at the brushess to make the motor run the opposite direction but the drive wont reverse.

no becuase the bendix (the mechanism that allows the starter to engage and disengage when the car starts) will not engage in the reverse direction.
