This type of stain is one of the hardest to get out the carpet. I would recommend using a wet vac and slowly pour hot water (from a kettle) on he spot and vacuum it up at the same time, (this will open up the dye ports on the carpet fibre releasing the stain. and remove the residue from the carpet). If the stain is still visible than try putting Dawn dishwashing liquid (2 or 3 drops into one cup of water or carpet spotter. Dampen the spot letting it soak on the stain for about 5 minutes and repeat step one. After this you should rinse the area again with the wet vac and water.

Oil for an indoor heating unit is highly unlikely to be crude oil which is petroleum in its natural state as it comes from underground.

Be glad that it is processed and refined oil and that it is unused, these all make your task easier.

Dawn dishwashing liquid is the gold standard when it comes to removing grease/ oil. Remember that when the EXXON Valdez had the oil spill in Alaska and the wildlife were struggling to survive due to being coated in oil? Dawn was reported to be the degreaser of choice to clean the animals without harming them further.

Sometimes at some stores extra heavy duty grease cutting versions of Dawn may be available.

use Dawn full strength, scrub, rinse many many times with a carpet steamer ( read HOT water)

RE: toxicity, ask for the MSDS sheet from your oil supplier. This is a federal government mandated information sheet required on many types of potentially harmful substances. Your oil supplier can and must provide it when asked. If you do not understand what it says, get someone to help you decipher it-- possibly a reference librarian, a local school science teacher - elementary thru college, just whomever is available.

try spraying a bit of WD-40 on it. it will desolve the oil then clean the WD-40 off the carpet with soap.

Always try DAWN dish soap first. It saves birds subject to oil spills.
