To keep it open for trade. Several other countries were colonizing everywhere they could at the time. It was first come first serve. After colonizing , they defended them from something worse. Of course if you hate the brits,you won't agree.

You're asking a very broad question. Basically, the British built an empire for economical reasons foremost. Use your common sense. What could be some of the effects of colonialism in any country? Maybe poverty, a sense of inferiority, unstable infrastructure, corrupt government? And for the others, look it up on the internet.

Also, it was the perfect base for the British to counteract the Eastern dominated Opium trade.
