I heard that if your pregnant, an ovulation kit would show you a false positive. Does it always HAVE to be positive, or could it show that your done ovalation, and be negative again, but still be pregnant?

LH (lutenizing hormone, the last hormone to surge prior to ovulation) and hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin, the pregnancy hormone) are very chemically similar. While an ovulation test does not discriminate between the two, a pregnancy test does. Thus an ovulation test will be positive if you are ovulating OR if you are pregnant, but a pregnancy test will ONLY be positive if you are pregnant (or if you have received hCG injections from your doctor through fertility treatment).

Here's how an OPK would read in a pregnancy cycle.

Before ovulation, negative. A day or two before ovulation, positive. A few days after ovulation, negative. The ovulation test would then be positive again around the time that you would get a positive pregnancy test, and should remain positive after that throughout your entire pregnancy - not because there are high levels of LH, which there aren't, but because there are high levels of hCG, which is chemically similar to LH.

You CAN use an ovulation test as a pregnancy test if you'd like, as long as you're sure you've already ovulated.

It would continue to show a positive sign until several months into the pregnancy. The test is designed to detect the LH hormone, which peaks when you ovulate. LH and HCG (the human growth hormone that pregnancy tests detect) are chemically similar. That is why some women can use an ovualtion predictor stick as a home pregnancy test. But unlike LH which only surges around the time of ovulation, HCG amounts would continue to increase as the fetus grows. That is why the ovualtion sticks would continue to show a positive sign. A negative stick would mean that you are not pregnant and not currently ovulating.

An ovulation kit measures LH hormone which is always present in your urine...just more so when you ovulate and yes, when you are pregnant. A pregnancy test measures HCG hormone which is only present if you are pregnant!

ovulation kits just show that the the (eggs) are there and ready
to be fertilized-it will show if you have a high chemical level-that will indicate only that the (eggs)are there now. if you think you are pregnant you need a pregnancy test. the ovulation test wont test for pregnancy.
