"Punch" refers to the character Punch in the "Punch and Judy" puppet show. Punch is an extremely mischievous, even malicious, character who constantly gloats about his misdeeds. When someone is as pleased as punch about something, he is as happy and satisfied about it as Punch seems to be about his own cleverness.
