I'm about 8 months preggies and have had a craving for ice. I eat lots of crushed ice during the day (i also eat regularly) but my step father said that eating too much ice with low iron is fatal to me and my baby, apparently it almost happened to someone that he knew. I thought that ice was good for you. Is there any truth to this or is this a myth? Could I be putting my young one in danger?

The ice is not bad for you - but craving ice is a sure sign that you are very iron deficient and you should get your blood counts done and have your blood iron checked. Are you taking prenatal vitamins with or with out iron? You probably need to be on some iron supplement - and you should talk to your doctor because there is also a danger in taking too much iron. I have iron deficiency (anemia) - and 65 mg is ok to take. Any more than that could be dangerous... But you need to see your doctor.

I had been eating ice from 10 years even during winters. Then I got pregnant in July and as I was severly anaemic Hg-7, I was given Iron supplements. Since then I have lost craving for ice. I feel so good now...as eating ice from so many years had made my jaw muscles stronger and gave a diff shape to my face.
Craving for ice or any other non nutritional things is called pica and is due to defficiency of iron. If you take iron supplements you will automatically lose your craving for ice.

I know that when you have low iron, you crave ice. I have never heard of ice having a harmful effect on anyone who is pregnant. As it was said earlier, ice is water and water is used to hydrate your body. I personally think your stepdad may have gotten some of his info twisted. Since your stepfather and I are not doctor's, I would consult your Obgyn for the best and most reliable answer.

From what you say, your showing signs of pica. Women with pica have cravings for things such as clay, chalk, ice, etc. This can lead to iron deficiency anemia. You should contact your doctor or nurse and inform them of this to prevent or monitor your iron levels. There has been no definite health consequences found to babies of iron deficient mothers. However, you should not take that chance. If you are showing signs of fatigue, anorexia, or weakness contact your health care provider.

Well honey when you go to have the baby you will get nothing but ice until after you give birth. It is true that ice does lower your iron.

If you are chewing it, it is not good for your teeth. Craving ice is a symptom of anemia. Have your doctor check your blood iron levels. If it is low than they will recommend an iron supplement.
