they stare coz they believe in something or the other and can't imagine not believing. Im an atheist and it happened a few times to me, but i asked my friends why they feel that way, and they said they can deal with different beliefs but its hard for them to imagine not following any religion. Furthur questions led to confusion and a religious argument so i didn't get anything else out of them

Because most people can't believe that someone can't believe in something religion wise. For them it's like breathing, it gives them peace of mind to know that there is something there. Atheist, even without saying anything, challenges that belief system. To not believe in something is scary.

Do people actually stop you on the street and ask you what you are? Hasn't happened to me once in my many years. When people that are close to me start heading in that direction, I just tell them that my personal beliefs are my own.. an intimate part of my nature that I don't feel compelled to share or debate or preach to others. That usually shuts them up.

I'm guessing because something like 95% percent of people believe in some sort of god or universal force even if it's not christian.
You should totally go watch "Charlie and candy mountain" on you tube (that's not the title, but it's the one with the unicorns). "shunnnn, shunnn the non-believer!"
ok i'm sorry....have fun and good luck with the soul-searching...if you were doing that?....leave out the unicorns. =)

B/c how can you go through life not believing that there is something out there bigger than yourself. maybe people stare or look at you funny when you tell them that is b/c they can't believe on what you are missing out on. I mean come on there are so many denominations out there or religions how can you not believe in something?
