Are you able to separate the personal emotions in such a song, and just enjoy it? Or is it just off limits now...

I had a close buddy who loved playing Bridge over Troubled Water who died of a heart attack. It made me quite melancholy to listen to it shortly after his death. Now it brings fond memories.

Yes, I can still listen to & enjoy the song. There are certain songs that will always bring back memories of those from my past & I can't separate the emotions and memories from the song. However, I won't make a song "off limits" because of a person in my past -even if the song creates a sense of melancholy each time I listen to it.

I am unable to separate the emotions I have in a song, it does remind me of a person that I knew and loved. Now I don't listen to it, and if I do hear it I shut off the radio and walk away.

There are a couple of songs i can't listen to for more than a few seconds...

"You're So Beautiful" - Joe Cocker

And...

"Down Under" - Men At Work

Those two get me every time.

I despise the memories associated with those songs. They remind me of the person i used to be and never want to be again.

Most I can seperate and still enjoy, or enjoy because of the emotion! But I do have one or two I cannot listen to.
There's one by evanescence I cannot listen to without crying. It was dedicated to two friends who died in a car crash....they were only in high school. And the guy I detested was being a show off, and speeding while driving and got them killed. Then You are my sunshine, my mom sang it to me on her 2 wk visit, she promised to call and write, and then had no contact with me for the next 8 yrs. I was so broken hearted.
But most I can still enjoy. Can you please answer your own question by adding additional details? I would like to know how you deal with songs, that hold memories. Thanks!

I can, often. Most of the time the song stays with the person, and it's always a good memory. But every once in a while....a song can move, change my mood and attach itself to another person. I can't really remove the memories of someone completely from a song, but I love music so much that it doesn't matter.

The songs from the 60's, many wonderful memories. The personal emotions are long gone, but the memories will always be with me.

That depends entirely on the person it reminds me of and time of the year. I have some songs that are very difficult to hear near the anniversary of a persons death and some I can't hear at all because the feeling of loss is still to fresh even years later.

Most of the time I can, but if the song reminds me too much of someone that has hurt me in the past, then I can't listen to it,

Sadly, both of my sisters passed, and I have a hard time making it through Ozzy & Pearl Jam, as they were their bands. I usually break down & cry, but sometimes when I don't I feel as though I'm healing. Music can bring a wide string of emotions.
