3 months ago i underwent a colposcopy and biopsy after an abnormal PAP. The results came back negative on both exams. My docor recommended that i have another PAP and HPV DNA test 3 months later. The PAP come back normal, but the HPV DNA came back high risk levels. My co-workers say it's not possible to have a normal pap and have an hpv. Is it possible to have a result like mine?

Yes, it is entirely possible to be positive for HPV but have a normal PAP result.

The PAP test does not test for the presence or absence of viruses or other baddies specifically. It only really tests for changes that occur, for whatever reasons, in the patient's cervical cells - what the docs call, dysplasia (precancerous changes in said cells). In the case of HPV these changes may or may not have been caused by the virus. To find HPV the specific test must be done and this is because of the long term risks that HPV entails. Elevated cancer risks, not to mention the risk of passing it on.
It must be noted that HPV changes/mutates often and in some cases can actually go away, there is some research to look into for this, but not a lot is known yet. In most people, however, the virus is there to stay and to be safe you should continue to get regular PAPs to ensure that, virus or no, your dysplasia does not return; since cancer is a real long term risk of HPV, other risk factors like smoking should be avoided to reduce the overall risk.

Your co-workers are WRONG. HPV is a virus that comes and goes. You can test positive for it one month and negative for it the next. It is very possible to have results like yours because I am having those exact same results. I have had yearly checkups since I was 18 and every year mine has been negative. At my 6 week check up after having my son 5 months ago I tested high risk for HPV. I tested negative while pregnant with him. HPV is also the virus that can cause cervical cancer so you should really be seen every 3 months as your doctor has requested until you either retest negative for HPV or you test postive for cancer cells. At least 50% of sexually active people will get HPV at some time in their lives. Most of the time, HPV goes away on its own. When HPV is gone, the cervix cells go back to normal. But sometimes, HPV does not go away. Instead, it lingers and continues to change the cells on a woman’s cervix. These cell changes can lead to cancer over time, if they are not treated. Most people do not show any symptoms

Yes you can. The probe picks up the virus, the pap picks up dysplasia what this means is that it picks up cells that the virus has left on your cervix which could turn in to vaginal warts. or already has. The probe has detected a dormant virus which means if could infect your partners so protect yourself and others always use condoms and get your paps done as directed by your Doc.
