There's no real difference. Everything gets translated into 32-bit number addresses through DNS servers anyway. Addresses like www.yahoo.com or .net are used for human convenience. The suffix allows more sites with the same name. With the explosion of commercial sites in the 1990s the .com suffix was getting crowded, so they added the .net suffix.

As far as your service is concerned, there is no significant difference.
Now to tell you more than you want to know. there are different suffixes to designate different organizations, like someone else said, to increase the available number of email addresses.
.com=any general domain designation
.biz=business
.gov=government
.edu=education
.org=non-profit organization, and among others,
.net=networks
Thus, aa.com=American Airlines, while aa.org=Alcoholics Anonymous, 2 different entities using the same "trademark" address.
In your case, you moved from an ISP with a .com address to one with a .net address. Examples are aol, bellsouth, peoplepc are all .com; verizon, att, netzero, earthlink are all .net.
Continuing useless information, most companies use a network system to restrict access to and export of sensitive company information. Your ISP has the same capability, but is used in a way that should not interfere with your use of the web.
If I haven't over-confused you yet, it is a miracle. Frankly, at one time your question had me going in circles also. I still don't know a lot about networks. Hope I never have to. And I wish the same for you.

.com is a top level domain for the Internet intended to be used by corporations, whereas .net is the same thing intended for networks. However, there are no actual restrictions on who may register, so they can be treated as the same thing.

essentially, nothing.

.com is a company, .net is a network.

Usuability won't change, it's just an organizing system.
