When I am driving my car it does not smoke, everything is fine, but if I let it idle for a few minutes, like if I am sitting in traffic or I park and do not turn it off, when I drive away a huge cloud of blue smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. I think it is some kind of carbonation build up but I am not sure how to fix it. The car is an 88 Toyota Cressida, everything about the car is great, but this one thing. Does anyone know what the fix is?

Blue smoke is a sign of oil getting into the cylinders somehow you might want to get your head gasket checked or some other part of the engine. Your car might be running rich in fuel as well. Just take this to your locla repair shop for proper diagnosis and you can buy the parts yourself and save on labor costs. Get a service manual for your car while you are at it. This will shop your the torque specs and ways to change parts.

i own a repair shop, and the color of smoke your describing is oil smoke and it may need to have the oil changed in it, id also keep an eye on the oil,it don't take a lot of oil to make smoke, and it may just be the valve stem seals bad on it,and at an idle it builds up enough to smoke a little, but blue smoke is a sign of future trouble if you don't have it repaired now ,it may get worse on it,id just keep an eye on it for a few days and see if it does it all the time, and if so have it checked to see ,but the seals will cause it to smoke a lot,and sometimes the driver wont notice it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Its running rich sounds like, or your ignition is weak allowing unburnt fuel to build up in the cylinders. Do a tune up if not recently done, if the smoke is whitish blue you probably have some valve seals leaking.

Might take a look at the pcv valve. If not working could be getting positive pressure in crancase and forcing oil into combustion chamber.

Well the blue smoke is oil. Most likely you need to have the engine rebuilt. The rings and seals need to be replaced.

Not rings, your problem is worn valve seals. Blue smoke is from oil leaking past the valve seals, into the cylinder.

the color of the smoke tells you a lot .in general blue smoke is unburnt fuel, grey to black is oil ,white is coolant. what you said sounds like you are in need of a tuneup which is plugs wires and maybe a coil . in an older car you may need to inspect the distributor cap and rotary button. even try a carb and injector cleaner but only if it is safe for catalytic converters.

Have you considered using a nicotine patch on your car? That would help it quit smoking.
