For many, many years, baseball was considered solely an American sport, and a certain amount of patriotic arrogance prevented the recognition of the quality of play in other countries.

Since that time, Major League Baseball has made strides to recognize play in other countries. Prominent players come from all over the world, including several countries in Latin America and Asia. The MLB runs seasonal leagues and provides training in some of these countries now.

Earlier this year, for the first time, we had what might truly be called a world championship with the advent of the World Baseball Classic (http://ww2.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/index.jsp).

So yes, it is a bit silly to consider the St. Louis Cardinals to be the "world champions" in this day and age, and hopefully that will change with time.

The World Series started before baseball spread to other countries and became popular. So, it pretty much was the World Series then, and they just haven't changed the name. It's not only U.S. teams either, there are the Toronto Blue Jays and there used to be the Montreal Expos before the team was moved to Washington D.C. and became the Nationals. Astros for World Champs 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Reason is that Americans think that they are the entire world so even though there is a team in Canada (Sort of), the Americans think that they are the only country that counts.
