Surely, this was a hastey last minute change to create publicity?

to be honest - i was a bit shocked that she had killed off a main character.
but at Hogwarts the head-teachers never die, they get to 'live' in a picture in the masters' office.

for the story to work, Harry had always been protected by Dumbledore, and now that he is gone Voldemort can now attack.
it has always been an idea of mine that Harry will save both the Wizarding world and the Muggle world, but Voldemort and Harry will probably kill each other during the 'FINAL' ever battle - thus rounding off the characters.

and anyway, even if it was a 'publicity' stunt by J.K.Rowling, i still can't wait for book 7 to come out.

The truth of the matter is - Why did Rowling kill off Dumbledore in book 6? There's only one person who can answer that question:

J.K. Rowling

Any other answers you find here are only speculation, and as such of no real value - unless you ask the author yourself, or perhaps are lucky enough to speak with a member of her family, there's no way anyone here could possibly answer that question.

no he Way rumoured to have been killed of long before it was put on sale. i think it was to isolate harry in the final book because Harry's definitely screwed with out Dumbledore also its a perfect reason to close down Hogwarts and show that nobody is safe and that for the last book the rules have all changed.

I think it was because Dumbledore was far too good a character and JK Rowling was a bit jealous of his success and popularity.
I'm desperately hoping he comes back in the last book but I won't be holding my breath.
I thought Sirius Black might come back as a ghost, and was very disappointed he didn't.
I don't think she cares about the great characters or her readers, the last book was pure self indulgence.

Come on Book 7! I think it was because Harry needs to face Voldemort alone in the last book.

Because, he was the only person who could protect Harry, the only person Voldemort is afraid of, now with him gone, Harry's on his own, he'll probably come back as a ghost in No. 7

She needs to have Harry saving himself, not depending on Dumbledore to save him. Harry is growing up.

Because he is the only one Voldemort fears i.e. is the only one protecting harry from him, so, in order for the prophecy to work, she had to kill him off.
