"Rebecca" by Daphne duMaurier
First line is something like "I dreamed I was at Manderly last night." The classic romance novel--a beautiful young heroine, a witchy housekeeper, a rich mysterious man, some mystery about the first wife.

Anything by Jude Deveraux. A Knight in shining Armor is my favorate. I have read most of her books, they all have happy endings but she has a sense of humor also.
