Please don't suggest acdsee or others. The files have always open for viewing before.Please, 500 pics of grandkids, caught in computer hell somewhere.

If the filename extension has changed or the default viewer has changed because you loaded a new program, either could be causing this problem.
Right click on one of the pictures, then scroll down to Properties.
With the Properties box open, look at the filename in the top box, and the "Type of file" on the next line.
The filename.ext should be something like "picture.jpg" or "picture.bmp"
Type of file would be "JPEG image" or "Bitmap image"
If the filename doesn't have a three letter extension, like .jpg or .bmp then you can add it by renaming the file.
See if this doesn't solve your problem
Otherwise, on the third line down of the Properties window, it says "Opens With"
Click on Change, and select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, then click on OK
