I believe that when you go to jail, at your next turn, you can choose to pay the $50 fine or not. If you do, you pay the fine, roll the dice, and advance what the dice say, so if you roll a 5-4 and land on New York Avenue with a hotel and have only $900 and must pay a $1000 rent, you're bankrupt. If you don't pay the fine, you roll the dice. If they come up doubles, you go that many number of squares, so that if you roll 4-4 you go to Tennessee Avenue with a hotel and pay $950. If you don't roll doubles, which is 5 times as likely, then you don't go anywhere. You just sit in jail and don't pay anybody. As you can see, with high rents on the board, you will want to stay in jail.

On your second turn, the same thing happens. You can either pay $50 or not. If you pay $50, then you roll the dice and go that number of squares. If you don't pay $50, then if you roll doubles, you leave jail and go that number of squares; if you don't, you stay in jail for another turn.

On your third turn, you can pay $50 or not. If you pay $50, you go that number of squares. If you don't pay $50, you roll the dice. If they come up doubles, you go that number of squares. If they don't come up doubles, this is it. You are not allowed to stay in jail forever. You MUST pay $50 and go the number indicated on the dice. If you have only $30 when this happens, even after mortgaging to the hilt, you are bankrupt, and the bank auctions off all your property.

Hope this explains it. Stay in jail when the rents are high; if rents are low and there are a large number of unowned properties, pay the fine and get out.

Either pay 50 dollars use a get out of jail free card or try up to three turns to roll a double. If not pay 50 dollars and obey the dice of your third turn. You do collect rent from jail.

If you just enter the jail without being sent there, you are just visiting. If you are sent there, by either landing on the go to jail space , rolling doubles three times in a row, or getting the jail card, then you must pay $50 to get out on your next turn, use a get out of jail free card, or try to roll doubles. If you try to roll doubles and fail to do so after three turns, you get out anyway on your next turn.

You roll the dice when it is you turn, but unless you roll doubles, you do not move or collect money or buy/sell properties.

If you Do roll doubles, you move to "just visiting" and may roll and move normally on your next turn.

Failing that, you may use a "get out of jail free" card to the same effect, or you may "buy" your exit from jail with a predetermined amount of money ( I don't recall how much--likely $200.00)

If none of that is possible, you must continue to rot in jail until you luck out on the doubles...

There are 3 methods to get out of jail.
1 roll a double, eg two 6, or 2 ones.
2 pay $500 and get out immediately.
3 use the get out of jail card which you can get from the chance or community chest deck.

The rules keep changing. I have seen games that were thirty years old and the rules are different that the ones made today. Good luck.
