both brands are good. Look at the price. You want enough RAM to do everything. Go for 2Gig, not so expensive if you buy it in the initial configuration. What size of screen? 15"4 are cheaper, but smaller... but again lighter. If you intend to move around a lot, it may be better. Mediacenter is pleasant, enabling you to have a multimedia computer, and smart, because it is windows pro and not home, and it is cheaper than win.pro. Not a bad choice. HP has an excellent service, if you e-mail them, and a catastrophe if you call them. But with e-mails, you will get just about all your problems fixed.
My heart would go towards hp, with one of the new ones, dual core and adding a tuner card, with a remote, you should manage around $1200 to 1500, less if you go for 1gig in ram (increasing the ram later is possible, but expensive, like $300 for another gig). It is cheaper without the tuner which can be bought separately later. Around $1000... and you will have something nice.

You mean like Ford or Chevy?
It depends on how big of an engine you want, how much performance, etc.
Open the Control Panel and click on Performance and Maintenance, then click on System
With the System Properties window open, on the General tab, it shows you almost everything you need to know to compare computer and what to expect in the way of performance.
Under the Computer heading, it shows the processor type and speed, which is most important. A 1.5 GHz (Giga Hertz)processor is a minimum these days. Next it show the amount of memory; 500 MB (Megabytes) ram is minimum, and 1GB (Gigabytes) is better.
To find the size of the hard disk, you have to act like you're going to run the Defrag program.
Click on Start then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then select Disk Defragmenter.
At the top you will see the Drive C listed and the capacity out to the right. It should be at least 40 GB. More is better.

Either of those are fine. HP/Compaq are the same company. Toshiba is also a good machine.
I wouldn't buy anything with less than 1 gb of RAM, and a 100 gb hard drive.
You should be able to do this for less than $1,000
Other than that. Just stick with a "Brand Name" machine and you can't go too wrong.

It all depends on how much $$ you want to spend! If you are goin cheap, try Dell Inspiron B130, if you want a medium try compaq, and if you need a really good laptop, even though they are really expensive, I would get a Mac!
