Congratulations and welcome to womanhood. This question is one but many you will have concerning the changes that your body is and will be going through. I know that I sound like some old film or textbook by saying that, but it's true. I want you know that during the first couple of years of this phase of your life you do not have a great deal to worry about. This is a time of irregularity as your body is searching and seeking a new rhythm of its own - different from your peers. I do suggest, however, that you pay close attention to your body - using a calendar to keep track of the number of days between each cycle, the number of days that each cycle last; how heavy or light your period is (i.e. the amount of blood that is discharged from your body and how fast); and if you experience any pain and how you react to that pain.

For myself...my period occurs during the last two weeks of the month, every other month, last for three days, is a medium flow, and extremely painful during the first day and mildly painful in the mornings during.

You, yourself, may experience the latter, as well. Do not worry that is normal, too. After all your body is now using muscles that it has never used before/ not used on a daily basis. From my understanding my cycles are painful in the mornings because I am going from a resting state (sleeping) to a more active state (being up and about).

I also suggest that you change your pad or Tampax every two hours (or according to the packaging) and that you carry extras with you.

Yes, it's completely normal. You shouldn't really expect your period to follow a "regular" schedule until you've had it for at least two years, and even then, what's considered "normal" for most people may not be normal for you. Everyone has a different menstrual cycle. Later on, if you do find yourself having very irregular cycles after having a set cycle for awhile, or having extremely painful cramps, etc., you can always visit your doctor about it. Right now though, don't expect a normal cycle. You may go months without having another period. I hope this helps.

It is very normal for a young woman's periods to be irregular at first. As your body regulates its hormonal cycle, your periods should settle into a regular pattern.

If, by the time you're 16-17, if your periods have not regulated or are very spread out (3-6 months or even up to a year apart), talk to your doctor, as easily treated hormonal problems may be at play.

If you are sexually active, be especially careful; you can get pregnant, even if your periods aren't regular-and the fact you don't know your cycle's pattern means you can't even try to predict when you may be ovulating and thus fertile.

Don't worry. It is very normal to be irregular for a really long time. My daughter is 16 and her periods are irregular and her doctor says that as long as she is not in discomfort or her periods dont' bother her and aren't too close to one another, she is fine.

He said it can take a girl up to 2 or 3 years to be regular.

So if you aren't having pain or periods that last 10 days or more you are more than likely fine.

But if you are really worried, check with your doctor the next time you go in.

it's most definitely normal. absolutely. most people don't start out regularly. also, "regular" could mean anything. your cycle could end up being like 40 days long and you'd get your period once every 40 days instead of once every 30 days. i started out regular, and then i became irregular. it changes a lot in the first 2 years. my sister got it for the first time then didnt get it for two years. so. you're okay. don't be worried.

Absolutely and 100% normal. It takes most people at least a year after their first period to get into a regular cycle, and a fair number of women never have complete regularity.

It's totally normal to be irregular. I got my period when I was 10, and sometimes it would be 40 days or more until I'd get another. Talk to your mom if you have more specific questions.
