In mathematics, it's an unmarked ruler, literallly a straight edge. It's one of the two tools allowed for traditional constructions.

straight edge in math is usually a ruler or anything that can be used as a ruler. ex: edge of a hard piece of paper that can be used as a ruler

It depends in what context you mean.

If linked with music (hardcore, abbreviated to hXc) it is a way of living, a philosophy. Having a straight edge (abbreviated to sXe) means being conscious of what is being done with your body, It involves abstaining from drugs (depending on how straight edge you are, this can be all drugs, including medicines, smoking, alcohol and products with caffeine or other such stimulants in them). Further, people with a straight edge are not promiscuous (not to be confused with them being celebate, although some are. This confusion was borne by the Minor Threat Lyrics "don't f**k" in Out of Step).

Again, depending on how straight edge the person is, vegetarianism and veganism also play roles. The more militant straight edge groups often claim that one cannot be straight edge without being a vegan.

Straight edge is essentially about knowing yourself in the best way possible and to have greater control over your life and to not need a crutch to rely on. It is about personal strength and conviction. That is why there are no rules to straight edge, despite some straight edgers trying to impose their way of thinking on others. Straight edge is about indvidual freedom of choice and personal integrity so that it is up to the individual as to how far he wishes to be straight edge. I do not take any form of drugs (legal or otherwise) except for caffeine (only in the form of teas, green tea etc), that includes things like paracetamol. I am not celebate but do not engage in any form of promiscuity or casual sex but am not a vegetarian or vegan.

Straight edge, as a concept began in 1980 in D.C. as a result of Ian Mackaye's Minor Threat. The two main songs that the concept evolved from were 'Straight Edge' and 'Out of Step'.

The black crosses that you see on the backs of straight edge kid's hands are borne from the shows that people went to see. Hardcore shows were not exclusive to adults, but those that were under drinking age were marked with a cross on the back of their hand, drawn with a black pen, to signify to the bar that they were not to be served. The straight edge kids took adopted this motif to show that they abstained from drinking. They self-censored themselves before entering shows.

(I) Don't smoke,
Don't drink,
Don't f**k1,
At least I can f**king think

Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up

Out of step with the world.

- 'Out of Step (With the World)', Minor Threat

I'm a person just like you
But i've got better things to do
Than sit around and f**k my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white s**t up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need

I've got the straight edge

'Straight Edge', by Minor Threat

Of course, you could just be asking what a straight edge is in maths etc, then it's a ruler, and i have just wasted a whole load of time! haha.
