I know that I can substitude the Umlaut vowels with ae, oe, and ue, but there is another way, by holding down the control button and pressing a specific key that I can get the German letters.

Two methods. Method 1 is to hold down the Alt key while keying the following three-digit sequences on the numeric keypad:
   ü   Alt/129
   ä   Alt/132
   Ä   Alt/142
   ö   Alt/148
   Ö   Alt/153
   Ü   Alt/154
   ë   Alt/137

Method 2 is to use the Character Map program. In Windows XP, get to it as follows:
  Start  >  All Programs  >  Accessories  >
  System Tools  >  Character Map
Select the character(s) you want, click Copy, and then paste the character(s) into your word processor or other application.

You can change to different keyboards by going into Control Panel and selecting Regional & Language options. I put a link below for the full instructions.

I'm assuming it's Windows you're using. If you're on a Mac, there's instructions for that on the link too.

Good luck
