I had a terrible cough when I was about six months along. I coughed Hard a LOT for at least a month. The doctor gave me some cough medicine supposedly safer for the baby than the over the counter stuff but he wasn't concerned about the coughing hurting the baby. The medicine didn't work at all so I stopped taking it since it posed more of a risk to the baby than my coughing did. I even had my amnio done during this coughing time. I Held my breath while the doctor inserted the needle. He knew how bad my cough was and boy was he quick. 30 sec. tops. If the medicine isn't helping much ditch it and just deal with the cough. It might help to have a humidifier in the room at night and drink some milk before bed. It kind of coats the throat a little and is good for both your wife and the baby assuming she's not allergic to it. Good luck

She's 4 months. Last week she almost got the flu - managed to escape the fever, etc but there a lingering cough. Its sort of dry coughing - mostly at night. We are away from home. Before we left doctor asked to take Rubitosin cough syrup - she's been taking that but not much releif. Can you...

Yes! She could shoot that thing right out!
Just kidding.
No, there's no way coughing can hurt your baby but certain medicines can and you may want to double check the cough syrup. The best thing for her to do is to drink a lot of orange juice and water or hot tea, suck cough drops or down some honey (coats the throat- less irritation), and keep vapor-rub handy. Take a hot shower or use a vaporizer. Avoid milk products. Maybe place a hot pack over her throat (if you don't have a hot pack, mircowave some rice in an old pillowcase and if it's too hot, wrap it in a disk towel). Also, anything with vitimin c, e, and a should help.
I hope she gets better. If it's the type of cough that sounds painful, her flu may have gone into her lungs and left fluid. Don't get too panicked but what I said should help with that too (especially the hot showers)

The coughing doesn't hurt the baby. Call her doctor and ask them for medicine to help your wife. My friend was pregnant and had bronchitus. She coughed so hard and vomited at the same time and broke three ribs. It was the craziest thing I have heard. It was so painful for her but the baby was just fine. I think that the baby has alot of protection.

Is the cough a dry cough or does it sound like their is Flem in the though? From what I understand it's the dry cough that is the worst. There are several kinds of Robitussin is she taking the right one ? You want to stop the cough and yet break up the congestion I was always told to take the DM kind of Robitussin. Try sucking on peppermint hard candy that will help sooth the throat

dont think it can hurt the baby...but it could be aggrivating for her...continue the robitosin and also when my mom was prego with my lil bro..she got a real bad cold and took rubitosin, cough drops and used a vicks vaporizer...worked wonders...dont let her get out in the cold night air...and tell her to drink warm stuff rather than cold..cold tends to trigger the cough..good luck and REST is the only thing that is gonna beat that cough..

I can't imagine that coughing would hurt the baby. It would have to be some majorly hard coughing.
As for home remedy...honestly, I would try the homemade cough syrup my mom use to make. Equal parts honey, lemon juice and wiskey. You just take a couple teaspoons so the alcohol wouldn't hurt anything, but it just might be enough to calm the cough.
Good luck!!!
