A lady just e-mailed me, & although I appreciate the concern, it kinda makes me mad.
She said I shouldn't have my baby's picture as my avatar because somebody might try to kidnap him. It's a small picture, you really can't see what he looks like & nobody knows his name, my name or where I live. I could be anywhere in the world!
What do you think about her e-mail and about having my baby, that it took me over 15 years to have that I am very proud of, as my avatar?? THANKS!

Using any photo software the picture you have posted can be enlarged and enhanced giving anyone a clear view of what your child looks like and the outfit your child is wearing...

By doing a simple reverse internet ping (hacking) someone can learn your ISP number and thus your area of residence... By further researching the ISP number your actual location can be found... While it does take alot of work and alot of computer knowledge it can and has been done...

The chances it would be done are very slim but yes there is a chance... Just because the picture appears small doesn't mean no one can manipulate it to enlarge and just because the internet gives you a measure of anonymity doesn't mean you are anonymous...

While I can understand bother the e-mailers concern I can also understand your pride just don;t allow your pride to blind you to the posibilities of someone who is very determined... Make sure to look at the picture you use very closely to avoid an identifying marker (for instance a shirt that has a photo printed on it of a local amusement park can give a big clue to location, or a shirt with a place name like " I love San Diego" can also give a clue...

Put pictures of your pride and joy on a website upon which you can control who views it rather than out there where anyone with any motive can view it.... You wouldn't let a stranger off the street ohh and ahhh over your baby in person why allow that same stranger to ohhh and ahh over the internet...

Proud is good, and it IS a sweet picture. If you're comfortable with it then I'd say it's up to you. (Pretty bold of her to contact you too! I completely understand your response!!)

That being said I don't post pix of my baby girl because I don't know who might see or use them.

Sure most people are very kind and helpful on Yahoo Answers so maybe it's paranoid, but the internet is unfortunately not a very nice place sometimes. You never know what nefarious things the bad eggs might be up to!!

God bless!

Congratulations! What a cutie. It's really great to be proud of your little one. I think it's the cutest Avatar I've seen yet!

No one knows you or where you are in this big world - I wouldn't worry about anything, but getting some sleep (you can probably use it!) Best Wishes.

well, i never thought of anyone kid napping a babys picture. I understand her concern, but it is really none of her buisness. I think you should take it as an idea and move on. I think it would piss me off too, I think your baby is very cute, and i like the fat rolls, he he. I would say leave it, unless you start to tell everyone where you live and how to find your baby. My kids have pics all over the internet, like on my space, and that even tells what city I live in. But there is noone who could find them and steal them. I say leave it. It makes people smile.

Well anybody can figure out how to find you if they know how. And I understand how she feels, but it's none of her business to say that to you. It's kinda like when you were pregnant and everyone had advice for you. Just go with you're instincts and ignore everyone else. As long as you're being careful and not putting your child in danger, there's nothing to worry too much about.

Before I opened this, I thought "oh I don't think I'd use my kids' pics as my avatar on here" lol I don't think anyone is going to try to kidnap him because of it though.

Just ignore her, she did probably mean well though.

She's right though. It could happen. Some crazy lady could see the babies picture and want him. She could track you. But the likelihood of that happening is so small I wouldn't worry about it. Your baby is very cute. You should be proud.

You know what, that is your baby, your avatar, tell her to mind her own business. The whole point of this web site is to ask and answer questions, no to judge what we use as avatars.

Tell her to take a flying leap.
